C. Daniel Boling: Listen to Music

Over Yonder

(C. Daniel Boling with Susan Clark)
July 14, 2003
C. Daniel Boling / ASCAP
I wrote the chorus of this song 20 years or more before the rest of the song. At the time I was working down on the Mexican border. Over the years I'd sing the chorus once in a while and Ellen always said she really liked it, and when was I going to finish the song.

It took a long, long time for me to figure out what had suggested the chorus to me in the first place. I finally realized that it was all the folks I encountered who were walking north looking for a better life...

The rest of the song just poured out.
OVER YONDER

Over yonder, where the lights are lower
Where my love is waiting for me
Sinking slowly, people here don’t know me
She’s the only one waiting for me

Left her crying, started walking, bound for working far away
Endless seeking, no one speaking words with meaning
Where’s my way?

Over yonder, where the lights are lower
Where my love is waiting for me
Sinking slowly, people here don’t know me
She’s the only one waiting for me

Constant working, lonesome yearning, dreams returning where she lay
No mistaking, scarcely making, both hearts breaking
Day by day

Over yonder, where the lights are lower
Where my love is waiting for me
Sinking slowly, people here don’t know me
She’s the only one waiting for me

And I’m farther away (It’s been so long)
Than I was the day before (Are you lonely too?)
And as time inches by (I will always love you)
My love for her grows more and it’s...

Over yonder, where the lights are lower
Where my love is waiting for me
